How do I describe shooting people I’ve known since before I was even a “photographer”? People I’ve known since before they were the “Maynards,” and just Curtis and Ashley.
The only difficulty I have when shooting this family is trying not to laugh too much because of how much Curtis picks on Ashley during the shoots. This is the second time I’ve had the pleasure of taking photos for their family and seeing how just how lovely they are is easily the best part of these experiences. Usually I try to make my male clients takes off their hats for my shoots, but knowing Curtis like I do, I knew that just wasn’t going to happen 🙂
While there’s always a bit of pressure to make sure the photos come out as best as they can, having known this family for so long, I feel like I put even more pressure on myself this time as I wanted to deliver something familiar to them, yet different enough that they felt like they got some different than they did last year.
That was especially considering how supportive they’ve been of me throughout my journey to becoming a photographer. My husband and I actually shared an apartment with Curtis and Ashley while I was still finishing my degree. So I guess you could say they’ve been fans of mine longer than almost anyone.
Seeing their family come together and grow through the years has been a great joy to me, but being able to capture these moments in time for them is even better. It makes me proud to see Bailey and Zachary grow into such wonderful young people, but I wouldn’t expect anything different.
It’s funny to think the people that used to watch “Lost” with me each week are not only my friends, but clients who will be looking back at my work for the rest of their lives. Never could I have dreamed that those Wednesday nights on the couch would lead to such a lasting relationship.
These are just a few of my favorite photos from their shoot.
